Answering questions about batting for quilting

I’m working on adding the batting to two projects right now so it’s a great time to collect and answer questions about batting. All my answers are specifically for hand quilting. I don’t know the much about machine quilting. My goal with writing this is for you to hear how I approach and think about this topic which is both particular to me and not comprehensive. But really, who wants to read an encyclopedia on batting?

With any technical aspect of a craft, it’s easy to get overwhelmed. What if you do something wrong and you ruin all that beautiful work you put into your quilt top? For me the best starting point has always been to understand the material. Knowing about material helps me make better decisions. I also love to learn from older crafters who have run into every possible problem.
