The quilts, they are a-haunted! Let’s talk about ghosts. Halloween is approaching.
My wakeful self says quilts are functional. They keep our family warm, make our home lovely, or grace the wall at the art gallery. But my sleepy self knows that quilts are also something extra. Something… special. Imbued with a little magic to keep the ghosts away. Funny how ordinary objects appear to be dusted with magic.
Have you ever drawn the curtains to keep out the night? Sometimes I climb under my quilt, happy to be warm, but also safe. That monster under the bed can not get through this forcefield. I feel the magic weaving its way in as I sew these tiny stitches. Magic that I hope will bring comfort to all those who wrap themselves tight within one of these quilts.
Today, on this hallowed eve, in our house, the quilts are turning from magic to haunted. Quilt ghost roam the house on this day where we are visited by the absent. Their presence can be felt more than our living and today we acknowledge them.
Freud warned that what we repress by day will haunt us by night. I’m happy for upside down days like today where we let our ghosts out to play. Listen to them in a playful and tempered way. Tonight we dance in disguise so they won’t know it’s us.
Tomorrow I’ll go back to covering beds in quilts. We have dreamers who need comfort here.
Here is a silly video I made of all the haunted quilts in our house. Thanks to the kids and their friends for their support.
Happy Halloween!
